I finally got the Plague Dogs on DVD this August while I was at the Chicago ComicCon. I have been a fav of this movie (and the book it was based on) for a long time...and now I no longer need my horrible copied-from-the-tape-at-the-movie-rental -store video any longer! Whoo hoo!
Okay, this is Snitter, the fox terrier with a hole in his head - the best character in the film. He is so angsty and uncertain and completely insane. He's great!
Anyways, the fully understand this pic, I'll explain the movie...since I am assuming not many people have seen it (for shame!). It starts out at an animal research facility in the Lake District in England (mainly sheep farmers and mountianous wilderness). Two dogs, Rowf (a cynical lab mix) and Snitter, manage to escape but only after being subjected to terrible experiments. Rowf has been drowned and revived to see if he could swim longer if he has hope of being rescued. Snitter had a brain operation to confuse the subjective and objective in his mind - basically, he hallucinates a lot and goes crazy (giving him the best lines ever!). Snitter had a master once, but he was killed after he pushed Snitter out of the way of a moving truck and got ran over himself (anyone who read the book know it is much sadder than that). Snitter is convinced that Rowf and him must find another master, but because of what the research facility has done to them, Rowf believes that all men are evil.
In order to survive, the dogs start killing sheep, which get the sheep farmers mad. They call the only place they know of that has dogs - the research facility. In order to save themselves, the facility say that the dogs were infested with the bubonic plague and has the government hunt them down.
At the end, Rowf and Snitter reach the sea. Helicopters, trucks and men with guns arrive at the shore. In desperation, Snitter says that he can see an island in the sea where they can be safe. He is so convinced - and convincing - that Rowf manages to overcome his fear of water and swim out with him. The goverment end pursuit. The movie ends with Rowf and Snitter swimming out to sea in a heavy fog:
Rowf: Is it far, Snitter?
Snitter: Not very far ol' Rowf.
Rowf: I can't see anything in front of us..
Snitter: Getting tired... can't seem to ... Anymore...
Rowf: Keep going.. Try..
Snitter: Can't swim anymore Rowf...
Rowf: We must be ... near the island.
Snitter: There isn't any island, Rowf...
Rowf: There is... there... can't you see it... Our island...just stay with me.. I'll get you there...
And the film ends there, with them swimming into nothingness.
It is such a depressing ending. And such a wonderfully touching film.
So this is Snitter, reaching the island...by drowning.
Yeah. Sad sad movie. Go here [link] if you want to visit the best Plague Dogs site on the web.
And I also want to mention that has really outdone herself this time. The coloring is so beautiful and really captures the tone of the ending scene of the movie. Thanks!
I remember that movie! Very vaguely tho..I think I saw it when I was like 7! I thought it would be a cute little doggy movie but boy was I wrong! I just remember the part when one of the dogs was eating raw eggs and when the other one found out he got soo mad for not sharing with him! LoL
Anyways, great drawing! It looks just like it came straight from the film! I feel sorry for him..aww.. Now I know where you got your name from!
I get your name now!! And am now bashing myself over my head with the book.
Though, there was a movie? Wow? I never ever finished the book. I don't know why though. Suppose it was too creepy. Like Watership Down times a hundred.
aw that sounds so sad... I gotta see that movie *takes note of title* Poor dog! Reminds me of Animal Farm for some reason, I think there was a sad part in that where a horse was taken off to the glue factory.
Love his expression, you really did well with his swimming pose too
Yeah, that was a sad part in Animal Farm. And I know Plague Dogs is avaible in the UK...I got a copy of the UK DVD but for Regin 1 or whatever the US is. But anyways, yeah, I think Snitt's expression was very well. Sort of confused and hopeful and....just right for the moment.
