Doctor....Who? *pt 2 with features*

Everytime I browse around DA I see artwork for Dr. Who and I'm now curious (especially as I have been on a BBC kick lately, Hustle being my favorite discovery!) about this show. However, even the smallest peek into this series has overwhelmed me...its HUGE!

Okay, so my questions are this: is Dr. Who a worthy series to watch? If you enjoy it, what do you like about it? And, most importantly...Where the hell should I begin??

EDIT: Okay, so I downloaded the first season torrent for the 2005 series of Doctor Who. At episode 7, I must say that I am enjoying this show quite a lot! Even though I enjoy the silliness of the show (the humor and pure FUN everyone is having on the show is so refreshing!) I also adore the hints at the backstory that newbies like me find very vague and mysterious. I'm *adoring* what I've seen so far and am gobbling up the show in the few hours I've had available after work.

In any case, I'm looking forward to the next season already...as well as getting my hands on older/Doctor-who-wears-a-scarf parts of the series. With all of the little teasing hints I've received thus far...I want to learn more, i.e., need to watch older stuff! Bring it on bittorrent sites out there! My computer shall cope somehow!

One of my favorite moments in the show occurred in the Christmas in Victorian England episode (ep. 3??) at the end. With Charles Dickens. When he asks about the fate of his books. Oh GAWD, pure beauty!! I think all of us creative types are wishing a friendly Doctor-with-flying-spacecraft will come along and tell us the fate of our works. It brought tears to my eyes..."But...how long [do my books] last???" "Forever." GUH, it speaks to me!!

And last night was a hallmark moment, methinks, because I was introduced to the Daleks. I recognized them at once, of course, like, "Oooh, THOSE things! How funny" or something like that. But then it spoke and I got majorly freaked out. I've learned an important lesson. Daleks = not to be laughed at. They freak me out a bit now, because they are such badasses. Talk about some intensely evil dudes.

....was anyone around the internets when LotR wa being turned into a film? I recall one site had a "Tolkien Virgin" blog where people talked about what the thought about the books when they hadn't read them before, as a way for people to remember what it was like when *they* first read the books...I think I've just written something like that.

In any case, the features:

Ohhhh... well, my husband loves the new series, but I'm a fan of old-school Who m'self. But I can't remember which ones are the best.... :(
Ha ha ha, well, I'm glad someone I know is familiar with the series!!! If you recall which ones you've liked, I'd love to hear about them: this seems like a piece of popular culture that I shouldn't be missing.

What do you think of the new series???? :D

I remember one called "City of Death" was really cool!

(Honestly I can't stand the new series ... ugh, it seems like poorly written fanfiction to me! But I realize I'm in the minority. ^^; )
Ooooooooh, something to youtube!

Ack!! badly written fanfic?? I shudder! But since I don't know anything about the series, I'm sure I'd probably enjoy it f I see the new one first...which is why I wanna watch, like, the old stuff!

I can't speak so much for the older seasons but as for the new series that started up in 2005...I highly suggest it. It's corny at first but it just gets better and the recent Doctor does a great job. :iconsally-avernier: and I were just discussing the last few episodes which were amazing. Of course they were written by Stephen Moffat and he's note worthy at least for this series :3(aka he has consistantly written the more noticeable episodes that always seem to stick with you)

I LOVE Doctor Who (not Dr. Who ever, just Doctor Who lol see? I'm a nerd). I love the old, the new, the books, the silly movie (actually I just like Paul McGann). Since the original started running in 1963 and whole chunks of it are lost at this moment of time, I'd probably start with the new series-but start with the first year-Christopher Eccleston is the Doctor-because while it's not all huge episode arcs like the original, it's a continuous story line. If you have netflix you can watch the whole first year online. My friend did that.

Now I'm no expert because I've only seen a couple dozen Tom Baker, Peter Davison and William Hartnell episodes from the original series, but I can usually answer any questions you might have, the new series explains a lot over time, and then there's always wikipedia, outpost gallifrey, and the like.

Hope this helped!

Oooooh, thanks for the suggestion! How many seasons is the new series? Lke...do I have to understand anything at all to get the storyline (in that, I have NO CLUE what the show is even about!! ^^)

I don't know who Stephen Moffat is, but if good writing is a big point for him, I'm pleased!
